Defeat is an Orphan: How Pakistan Lost the Great South Asian WarBy Myra MacDonald

When India and Pakistan held nuclear tests in 1998, they restarted the clock on a competition that had begun half a century earlier. Nuclear weapons restored strategic parity, erasing the advantage of India's much larger size and conventional military superiority. Yet in the years that followed Pakistan went on to lose decisively to India. It lost any ability to stake a serious claim to Kashmir, a region it called its jugular vein. Its ability to influence events in Afghanistan diminished. While India's growing economy won it recognition as a rising world power, Pakistan became known as a failing state. Pakistan had lost to India before but the setbacks since 1998 made this defeat irreversible. Defeat is an Orphan follows the rollercoaster ride through post-nuclear India-Pakistan, from bitter conflict in the mountains to military confrontation in the plains, from the hijacking of an Indian plane to the assault on Mumbai. Nuclear weapons proved to be Pakistan's undoing. They encouraged a reckless reliance on militant proxies even as the jihadis spun out of control outside and inside Pakistan. By shielding it from retaliation, the nuclear weapons also sealed it into its own dysfunction -- so much so that the Great South Asian War, fought on-and-off since 1947, was not so much won by India as lost by Pakistan.

Review 'A slashing indictment of Pakistani strategy by a journalist who has covered South Asia for decades ... MacDonald shows in dramatic detail how this obsession with India (and in particular the problem of a divided Kashmir) undermined Pakistan's democracy and economy, how peace opportunities were lost, and how Islamabad lost control of militant groups that it had initially fostered.' - Andrew J. Nathan, Foreign Affairs; 'MacDonald lucidly explains how the Pakistani establishment's strategic choices since the country's nuclear tests in 1998 contributed to growing political instability at home and isolation overseas. ... At a broader level, MacDonald's work demonstrates how the possession of nuclear weapons does not necessarily lead a country to pursue more moderate policies, and also highlights the difficulties and risks associated with trying to achieve a balance of power with a much larger rival.' - Choice magazine; 'A compelling account of Pakistan's recklessness in seeking to punch above its weight. Drawing on years of first-hand experience and conversations with key players in the region, MacDonald leaves no doubt about the toll exacted on its people by Pakistan's fruitless quest for parity with India. Its flawed nuclear thinking; its delusions of wresting control of Kashmir; its visions of mastery over Afghanistan, and its fatal obsession with the use of Islamist proxies are all deftly explored to explain why Pakistan has lost out in the Great South Asian War.' - Farzana Shaikh, author of Making Sense of Pakistan; 'Conventional accounts of the decades-long conflict between India and Pakistan attribute it to some mixture of historical rivalry and opportunistic politics. But this book provides us with a compelling narrative about the way in which Pakistan's relations with its giant neighbour have always been defined by the quixotic desire for parity, itself seen as the basis of a future friendship with India. From a constitutional demand by Muslim politicians in colonial times, MacDonald traces the career of parity as a diplomatic, military and terrorist idea into the present, in the process giving depth and coherence to the long history of Indo-Pakistani competition in South Asia and the world beyond.' - Faisal Devji, author Muslim Zion: Pakistan as a Political Idea; 'Pakistan's military strategy integrates the role of religious militant non-state proxies to fight its never-ending war with India. But, as MacDonald demonstrates, this approach by its generals has never borne any fruit and is likely to destabilise the region further with proliferation of tactical nuclear weapons.' - Ayesha Siddiqua, author of Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy

About the Author Myra MacDonald is a journalist and author specializing in South Asian politics and security. She was a correspondent for Reuters for nearly thirty years, and also published a book on the Siachen war. She lives in Scotland.

Leonardo Da Vinci: The Flights of the MindBy Charles Nicholl

Leonardo is the greatest, most multi-faceted and most mysterious of all Renaissance artists, but extraordinarily, considering his enormous reputation, this is the first full-length biography in English for several decades. Prize-winning author Charles Nicholl has immersed himself for five years in all the manuscripts, paintings and artefacts to produce an intimate portrait' of Leonardo. He uses these contemporary materials - his notebooks and sketchbooks, eye witnesses and early biographies, etc - as a way into the mental tone and physical texture of his life and has made myriad small discoveries about him and his work and his circle of associates. Among much else, the book identifies what Nicholl argues is an unknown portrait of the artist hanging in a church near Lodi in northern Italy. It also contains new material on his eccentric assistant Tomasso Masini, on his homosexual affairs in Florence, and on his curious relationship with a female model and/or prostitute from Cremona. A masterpiece of modern biography.

From Publishers Weekly
Nicholl aims for the man behind the myth in this penetrating, highly detailed biography, which recognizes da Vinci's "mysterious greatness as an artist, scientist and philosopher" but avoids hagiography (and nearly steers clear of the word "genius"). The illegitimate child of a Tuscan peasant girl and a local notary, da Vinci (1452–1519) was apprenticed as a teen to Florence sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio. Nicholl (Somebody Else: Arthur Rimbaud in Africa) conjectures convincingly about Leonardo's early career, though he tends to dwell overlong on technical aspects of Renaissance art production. Leonardo established a Florentine studio in 1477, but it was not until he moved to Milan five years later that he began to produce his iconic works: the painting Virgin of the Rocks, the famous Vitruvian Man drawing. Nicholl chronicles the production of The Last Supper and makes a firm statement about the Mona Lisa's identity. Numerous questions about Leonardo's life remain, unavoidably, unanswered, but Nicholl fills in the gaps with insight into the artist's cultural milieu, offering tidbits about Leonardo's sexuality, the sordid goings-on at the Borgia court and the multifarious fruits of the artist's astonishingly fertile curiosity and imagination. Nicholl's attention to da Vinci's polymathic pursuits, as well as his own translations from the artist's numerous notebooks, are some of this dense but readable volume's most compelling aspects. From Bookmarks Magazine
Forget Dan Brown’s fictional Da Vinci Code (**** May/June 2003); here’s the real deal. Award-winning author Nicholl draws on Leonardo’s notebooks to delve deep inside the mind of the beloved Renaissance icon. Celebrating Leonardo’s life and projects with contagious excitement and putting his achievements in the context of the Italian Renaissance as a whole, Nicholl considers Leonardo’s inspirations and influences. If we learn little new about Leonardo’s most famous works or his competition with Michelangelo, we gain valuable insight into the “cool, interior, ungraspable” creative process that raised Leonardo head and shoulders above his peers in most fields. Even with the spate of recent books on this master, Leonardo da Vinci stands out. It “isn’t merely a lovely book; it’s Leonardesque” (New York Times Book Review).

From Booklist
Award-winning biographer Nicholl takes a marvelously fresh and human approach to the fascinating life of Leonardo. Evincing delight in the vicissitudes of scholarly sleuthing and a love of literature, Nicholl, who has a gift for spotting overlooked gems, offers a unique focus on the language in Leonardo's famous notebooks. He is also unusually eloquent in his recognition of the importance of Leonardo's country boyhood and the resulting visual lexicon and "ecologically compassionate view of nature" (he eventually became a vegetarian) that underlie all of his work, from his finely detailed drawings and paintings to his fascination with flight. Nicholl carefully explicates Leonardo's musicality, habit of inquisitiveness, love of technology, and artistic practices and renowned works. He also happily extracts evidence of Leonardo's affection for various boyfriends, particularly a man whose nickname, Salai, translates as "Little Devil," and argues convincingly that Leonardo enjoyed a liaison with one of his beautiful female models. In sum, Nicholl portrays a far more complex and appealing man than the chilly word genius usually suggests. Donna Seaman

It seems like much of the knowledge base in Burn The Fat, Feed the Muscle is about 15 years or more old. There is some good basics of nutrition in a very motivational package. He does a good job of making a difficult proposition (losing weight and getting ripped) seem doable and appealing, without feeling easy.Nevertheless, his diet information is not very well informed and pretty overly simplistic. He goes on for page after page without really saying anything other than "don't eat too many calories. If you eat more calories in one food group you are going to need to eat less in another. If you aren't losing weight, eat less calories."You may gain some insight or motivation here, but overall it seems like you will do better elsewhere. If you are overweight and looking for a good place to get started in losing weight, I do recommend Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It (or the much longer Good Calories; Bad Calories). This will give you much more knowledgeable information base from which to base your nutritional decisions. After reading those you will be well-armed to wade through some misinformation and generalities here and glean out what might be good on the motivational or exercise side of things.Even so, after finishing it, I feel that this book is more hype and fluff than good content. What content is there is merely repeated multiple times over in order to expand it out into a full-length book.

This is my go to book for everything I want to know about getting in shape, loosing fat and eating healthy. I have even given this away as a gift. To give some background Tom's website: [..]his books have helped me drop over 100 lbs. and go from Morbidly Obese to a winning bodybuilder in less than 3 years. I am now 59 1/2. It can be done. This book is mostly highly recommended as well as the audio version of it.Update on my progress. Coming up in January 2017 with the help of the Burn the fat website and this book I have kept off all the fat I lost and now I am a competitive 60+ Masters Bodybuilder. There are many books that can help you loose weight but this is the only one I know of that is the book that can help you keep the fat off.

After reading this I can see why many people refer to it as 'the bible' of fat loss. Indeed, the book is thorough in every department and answered many questions I'd never got round to figuring out for myself. There are however one or two things I'd like to pick at, if I may, which I'll get to in a bit.Firstly, the book is well structured. It's split into four sections; mindset, nutrition, cardio and weight training.Mr Venuto is correct to point out that for anybody to make a body transformation, individuals must first have an important emotional reason to want to do so. By retaining an emotional need, you're more likely to stick with anything, not just a body transformation program. It is the nutrition section that is by far the bulk of this book and goes into such incredible detail as to leave no questions unanswered. I'd often tried the 'protein dripping' approach, eating small amounts of protein at very regular intervals. The book has change my mindset on this slightly in that I may have been overkilling it somewhat. I'd also been making the cardinal error of, for many years, training on only oats, instead of oats and protein - No more. If anything, this section is worth the price of the book alone. The cardio and weight sections are also very thorough, although admittedly, for me, I didn't learn a great deal of new stuff here other than a fresh approach and training method which I'll put into practice eventually. One of my major problems with the training regime was that for leg days, it only leaves three days for recovery before the next leg day. I've always required a minimum of four but hopefully, with my new nutrition plan, this will be mitigated somewhat and I understand that this won't be a problem for everybody. My biggest problem with the book, and it's quite a big one is as follows: The author states that it's not really possible to burn fat while gaining muscle at the same time. While yes, this is the truth, at least on some levels, it needn't be. It's true that fat burning and muscle building require your body to be in two opposing states, either a calorie deficit or a calorie surplus respectively. And while yes, this approach does work, there is indeed a way you can have both. At no point in the book does the author mention 'positive nitrogen balance.' Where you can be in a calorie deficit yet still build muscle because you're in a positive nitrogen balance.I believe that HIIT 'high intensity interval training' can also aid you in this and yes the book does go into some detail about HIIT. However, I believe this could have been pushed more, to help the muscle building and speed up the fat loss in an even shorter period of time. HIIT is an essential element to fat burning and muscle building and can seriously speed up the process and I think the author could have pushed this more rather than relying on long 45+ minute cardio session when a more intense and shorter HIIT workout would do the job far better and faster, with added resistance training of course. In conclusion; this book IS the bible of fat loss, but should be read in conjunction with one of the existing HIIT books to give you an even greater understanding and motivation at transforming your body quickly and healthily. My recommendation isHIIT - High Intensity Interval Training Explained by James Driver which is a highly entertaining and enlightening 'bible' as well.5 stars for Mr Venuto

So I read thinner leaner stronger first. Then I decided to read this and I'm so glad I did. Fantastic easy to follow information. TLS cited so many different studies it was tedious and torturous. Loved this so much more! If you're debating between the two choose this.

If you are trying to trim down and bulk up and really want to know the truth about diets, and I mean all diets from the past to present, then you owe it to yourself to get this book. However, if you are still determined to follow your favorite fad diet, then good luck. Tom tells you straight and to the point what you probably already know, but don't want to believe, the truth about losing weight and building good firm body mass. I found the book to be a real source of encouragement that helped me motivate myself and get to going. I got the audible version and loved it so much I purchased the book. I must warn you though in the beginning chapters the book sounds like one of those infomercials trying to sell you something just to get your money, but after you get through the intro Tom moves carefully from chapter to chapter explaining the science of the body and nutrition, and how to really burn fat while at the same time building good body mass. This is a life changing book and I highly recommend it to the person serious about changing their lifestyle and getting in the best shape of your life.
