It is a well organized, concise, enjoyable, uplifting, and well supported set of ideas that were missing from the dialogue about what is the grand scheme of things in the universe. This book is just the opposite. It is a set of unsupported, disjointed, and even contradictory ideas that run on and on and don't do justice to the topic of sexuality in modern culture or as addressed by God in the Bible. The Bible is incredibly loaded with sex positive examples that are ignored or explained away by modern christian leaders, so it's the perfect topic for someone like Rob Bell to tackle. But this book doesn't go far enough in uncovering the truth about our God given sexuality.

It’s always good to read any person’s beliefs and theories when they can back it up with logic and explain their take on things. You may still not agree with them but at least you’ll be exposed to intelligence and rational reasoning if the book is by Rob Bell. I feel set free without having been condemned and God doesn’t seem like this mean old man any longer.

I believe how we deal with the overarching topic of sexuality will be one of the most important topics we address in this generation of the church. Sadly, I think there are too few books that deal with this subject without taking a side in a ridiculous culture war. Bell does a nice job of dealing with the sickness and not the symptoms. This will be required reading for my kids, any man who asks to marry my daughters, and a suggested reading to any girl who says "yes" to my sons.Couldn't recommend it more.

Growing up in the church it was always made clear that sex before marriage is sin. However there seemed to be more energy spent on the "thou shall not" than how God really feels about being intimate with us... I loved the way Rob Bell laid the foundation for what sex's true essence is and just how relatable it is to our spirituality and not cloud it with religion. It made me realize how our culture and world has taken out the depth ness of sexual encounters and limited it to only the physical.. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I first started reading it. At first I thought it was going to be a book encouraging sex. Lately I have been hearing about many sects where casual sex is part of their rituals. As it turn out, the book is about abstinence. To sum it up in one sentence, the same way we worship one God, we should worship one and only one partner. In other words, have sex with only one partner, in the same way as we pray to only one God! The author explains the joys of having one sexual partner by giving real case examples.I really enjoyed reading this book and I felt at home with the author's reasoning. I really recommend reading this book!

Excellent book about relationships, not only with God but your spouse, I am no currently a huge Rob Bell fan, but this was written before he started espousing some of the things he's saying these days. Incredible helpful, informative and page turning reading. I also like very much the way he writes...as if we are in a room talking face to face! A must read for everyone. (Christians too!)

Love this book. Love the audiobook even more (Rob Bell himself dictates). The messages resonate deeply and just make sense; I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially young adults.

Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea is an overview of the history of austerity economic policy, an explanation of how austerity as a policy works (or, more accurately, does not work), and an examination of austerity policies as they have been implemented in the real world. As one can surmise from the book's subtitle, Blyth does not hold a rosy view of austerity as a policy but, though his disdain is clear, he still treats the idea with fairness throughout the book.What I most appreciated about Austerity was the way that most chapters (with the exception of the introduction and conclusion) was set up a bit like a textbook. The intent of the internal sections was to convey information and examine the scholarly research regarding austerity economic theory in light of criticism from other economists and - mainly - actual economies. However, Blyth took pains to make this information as accessible as possible to readers with little/no finance background by clearly explaining what measures meant and why things were important in the context of their real-world implications. I probably could have gotten more out of the analysis if I came to the book with a background in finance or math, but Austerity was understandable and highly educational nonetheless.

I really enjoyed this book; it summarized the debates about austerity for me and taught me a lot of things I didn't know about European austerity. I was aware of Keynes' The Economic Consequences of the Peace after WW I, for example, but not aware of how much the French at that time counted on reparations from Germany to heal their war-torn economy, while also trying to return to the gold standard. This led to French austerity, including cuts to their military while the Germans were inflating away their debts and rearming.I only gave it 4 stars because some of the writing is awkward; it needs a better proofreader. Many sentences involve mixed metaphors and there seem to be a few that say the opposite of what the author really means to say. At several points the author talks about how austerity is good for us all, when it is plain from the wider context that this is not what he thinks at all. Phrases like this are just confusing while trying to digest technical information about banking and economics. The author should have put these things into quotes or used some other rhetorical device. Austerity is not good for us.I totally agree that you cannot run a democracy on the gold standard for very long.If a 2nd edition comes out that cleans up some of the murky writing, I would give it 5 stars.

I found this book the same as many other people did - first I happened upon a video of the author talking against Austerity (quite compellingly) and then looked him up and found there was a book. I think along with Debt: The First 5,000 Years by David Graeber, it is the most important recent book on economics that I've read. A brilliant book, all told, and a must read for anyone that is following the macroeconomic discourse and thinks something about it is just off.While I started reading this book back in May (5 months ago), shortly after I was impressed by the video, I struggled to make progress in reading it. It wasn't until I girded myself and read it without distraction in the last few days that I got anywhere with it. This is not because it's a bad book, or that it's badly written, but simply because in the roughly 300 pages it packs more important, conceptual information than your average text-book. I often paused and went off to read some of the references, or just sat and thought through some of the logic. That this proved rewarding makes it worthwhile.What I found refreshing was that this is more than just a book that talks in terms that are in vogue in the public discourse. Instead, it takes a holistic approach.The author starts in the first three chapters by recapping the Financial Crisis in the US and the Eurozone Crisis, and exposing the 'moral play' behind the public discourse about it as patently false.To wit, both were purely crises within the Financial Sectors, but with banks having become systemically important, when the mortgage/ asset bubbles burst, governments were left holding the bills. The author points out quite acidly that what is today being called a "Sovereign Debt" crisis on both sides of the Atlantic actually wasn't - and critically, still isn't that. It is a crisis whose descriptions suffer from a fallacy of composition - in a nutshell, the people that made the mess are not the ones cleaning it up; we are all instead berating governments (who didn't make it) to clean it up, not realizing that we will be the ones settling the bill!The next three chapters summarize the history of Austerity, beginning with the times when nation state concept was itself young, and the "State" meant actually the "King", and had to be tied down and was not to be trusted with spending public money. The author starts by talking about the work of John Locke, David Hume, and Adam Smith - the dawn of the idea of private property and capitalism, and traces a line from them to both John Maynard Keynes, and Joseph Schumpeter, as well as the Austrian school exemplified by Hayek and Von Mises. In so doing, he exposes the intellectual roots of not only the Angela Merkels and Paul Ryans of the world, but also of the IMF's "Washington Consensus" that has driven liberalization in India (credited incorrectly to Manmohan Singh). Interestingly, he also shows why he thought Austerity was "Dangerous" - he draws a dotted line from Austerity in post WW1 Europe to the opening of political doors for Fascism and Nazism.I found this to be the most illuminating portion of the book, especially when it points out that although Austerity ideas were completely discredited by the end of the Second World War (having been a contributory cause to the extension of the Great Depression) they made a comeback through what are called the "Enablers of Austerity" - Milton Friedman's Monetarism, Neo-liberalism with its independent Central Banks, and the IMF and the aforementioned Washington Consensus. This is the best explanation I've seen for the complete disconnect between reality and the American and European ideologues currently peddling the conservative agenda.The author delves then into the case studies that are cited in support of Austerity - various historical instances worldwide, and the delightfully named "REBLL" alliance (Romania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Latvia, and Lithuania) that blew up their "Debt Stars". He proceeds to demolish each case, or (to use terminology picked up from police procedurals) definitely, convincingly introduces reasonable doubt against these poster children of Austerity.Only at the very end does the book go from descriptive to prescriptive, where the author suggests that higher taxes on the (infamous) 1% and others in the high income bracket, along with "financial repression" defined as mandated holding of inflation-susceptible government bonds by the Financial Industry are potential ways to cure the ballooned Sovereign Debt (which the latter caused) without fiscal contraction. This prescription is beyond my ken to qualify as good or bad, but hey - the other guys are clearly not helping any, so I say it's worth a shot!

The areas of the great burn have recovered in part; new areas begin the cycle of destruction and recovery.

The author, Timothy Egan, is an excellent reporter and columnist for The New York Times. Here with The Big Burn he reveals again how well he also writes history. In this case, the searing tale of the 1910 firestorm in the Northwest might have been lost to most Americans. Readers will find a wealth of information about not only the cataclysm itself but also what it represented for the management of the country’s forests, the development of fire prevention policies that held for decades, and the political will that a strong president exerted for wilderness preservation.I especially appreciate the extensive research Egan undertook for this volume, poring over Forestry Service records, many newspaper accounts, and testimony from the people swept up in the horrendous fire and its aftermath. I love reading about TR. Did not know about this fire in 1910. I love Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and our Natonal Parks, especially Yellowstone and Glacier and the history behind them. I knew that the lumber barrons and mine owners detested the idea of national parks and the formation of the Forest Rangers but this book really gives an indepth look of the people who wanted to preserve the lands in the western part of our country. I highly recommend this book!

Rich background to 3.2 million acre forest fire, this book was a history lesson, a political lesson and a life lesson all rolled into one. I found Egan's writing evokes the sort of raw emotion of a good book while weaving in the difficult political and historical facts that provide context. You can smell the smoke, feel the heat and appreciate the political turmoil that the newly minted word 'conservation' meant to both Land barons and the rare people like Muir, Pinchot and especially Teddy Roosevelt.

Timothy Egan is a terrific storyteller, especially when he's giving us a history lesson. This very readable book recounts the biggest wildfire in American history, the 1910 conflagration in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana and Idaho. To set the stage, Egan draws vivid portraits of the key players in the new conservation movement, among them Teddy Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot and John Muir, as well as those who opposed it. TR's successor, the feckless William Howard Taft, along with members of Congress beholden to big-money interests who viewed protection of millions of acres of wilderness a barrier to accumulating even more wealth, succeeded in defunding the nascent Forest Service, sewing the seeds of the disaster that followed in the drought-plagued summer of 1910. Comparisons to current-day political standoffs are inevitable. Riveting, suspenseful, often tragic, Egan's exhaustively researched account is every bit as compelling as "The Worst Hard Time," his book on the Dust Bowl. Highly recommended.

This is another great read from Timothy Egan. He highlights an event in the history of our country I was not aware of, the burning of 3 million acres of forest in Idaho, Montana, and Washington states in 1910. There are really several stories woven together here, which is typical of his style. The story of the fire is the most riviting, but the surrounding history is also very imporant to understanding where we are today in terms of national lands and the fight to use/abuse them for their resource value versus saving them for future generations.A drought dried out the land. The dry weather systems brought lightening. Then came the winds, the Palouse, named after the gently rolling waves of grass in Eastern Washington where they originate. Sound familiar? It is to those of us in the West who have had to run for our lives from wind whipped flames!You meet the cast of characters, such as the robber Barron's and their bought and paid for politicians whose greed drives them to see no beauty in the natural world, only resources to exploit for profit. And profit they did! You meet Teddie Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, giants in the push to preserve lands undisturbed or minimally disturbed by commerce. You meet the first Rangers, underfunded, but idealistic in the shared vision to protect these majestic forests from the logging and mining interests, ever frothing at the edges, threatening to spoil the lands for their own selfish gain. Lastly, you meet the firefighters, a ragtag group of minimally trained foreigners and Americans, eager for a paycheck and a start in the fledgling US Forest Service. Most notable of these is Ed Pulaski, an assistant Ranger, a local, with varied skills, and a family and town of his own to protect. He was a hero, unsung in many ways, a tragic figure who will always be remembered by firefighters for the equipment he invented which still bears his name. He saved scores because of his knowledge of the local lands, his quick thinking, and his leadership.As we fight a current drought in the West, and a never ending fire season, this book encourages us to remain humble before the very forces of nature which in the blink of an eye can destroy our hubristic endeavors.

I bought this book for my son's sixth birthday, uncertain of its message, but hopeful that it had something to do with growing up, and finding God's purpose for your life. It's all in the title-a young acorn, afraid to leave its "mother" tree, goes on a series of adventures until it finally matures enough to become a constant and reliable companion for a young girl, who is also searching for her purpose.Throughout the book, this tree compares himself to those around him-the orange trees, who grow faster and bear fruit. The flowering plants, whose yield is plentiful and more immediately gratifying. He is frustrated by how slowly he grows, by how unremarkable he seems to be, not realizing that it is he who will become the biggest, the strongest, and the greatest of them all.This message was exactly what I wanted to get across to my son. It is so easy for children to get caught up in comparing their accomplishments to others, especially if they mature much more slowly than their peers, or in my case, their siblings. I have children on both ends, and this book can speak to both of them.I was able to read this to a 3 and 6 year old, but it was a bit too long for my three year old, who had run off to grab another book 3/4 of the way through.Also, if you become emotional when you read "love you forever", this book will probably make you cry. I'm not overly emotional, but I couldn't help myself in the end, as I saw the message come full circle.The analogy isn't completely logical, but it works for a child, and I have been able to use it for both of my children throughout the week as their various frustrations come up.4 stars for the length, but with a little editing, it could easily be a five star book (I'm not sure the story line with the orange grove is necessary).

Excellent Message. Want to be clear that the point of the story is so good and relevant for all ages. 3 stars because story is lengthy which is fine but struggled (only slightly) to hold the attention of 3 & 6 yr old. Held their attention for first read through but not necessarily one that would be requested again and again. Better for older reader reader but not one they would necessarily pick up on their own to read.

Author knows for metaphorical books to teach character and to connect with the child. Sometimes those metaphors are completely missed if the child is not old enough to understand the metaphors and even when explained they don’t get it then they are too young for the book. It’s a picture book with a cute story and concept, but my 6 year old ( very smart and understands things like an expression and some metaphors after explained) has not completely grasped this metaphore after reading a few times. It’s a cute story and she will eventually so we kept it and have many of this authors books since they are written well, teach great concepts and they will even learn more about writing styles and metaphors as they continue to be exposed to them.

Physical book was sub-standard: I received this book quickly but was initially disappointed with the quality the book arrived in. Pages were not cut properly and were still stuck together. Some of the pages were folded and ran through the length of the page. My son didn’t mind the imperfections or seem to notice them, so I didn’t return the book.Story: The actual story is very cute and has a great message for everyone, young and old. It’s a little bit lengthy for a children’s bedtime story. It usually takes my son, 5 years old, and I at least 30 minutes to read. He enjoys reading the book with me and I enjoy our story time with this book. It’s a meaningful, inspiring, and encouraging story.

This is one of my 4yr old's favorite book. We started reading it wen he was 3yrs old.The first time my husband read it to him, he, my husband, got teary eyed. He didn't know what the book was about when he read it to him and he was caught by surprised; got him thinking about our son growing up.So yes, This book, made a grown man cry. LOL

I love this book. I love it for what it is, and I love it for how it speaks to me.I am now approaching age 60, and perhaps now I can understand what it means better than I ever could as a child. Perhaps in 20 years I will understand it even better. It is a story that grows with you.The acorn is called by his/her mother to "Just be the tree God made you to be."As a child I wanted to be lots of things. I wanted to be safe, but time and situations carried me from my safe zone. As a young adult I wanted to be all of the things that my friends were, and discovered that I didn't have their skills I had my own. Later I would begin to discover my own skills and talents. Inside the tiny acorn, is a great oak just waiting to grow. The little acorn didn't realize his potential, but his mother oak did. She reassured him that he can be a great oak tree of his own one day, and he did. He grew taller than the orange tree and the roses in the garden. He grew so large and strong, that one day his huge branches were able to hold a swing for a little girl. He watched her grow and become older until one day she no longer played on the swing. She sulked below its branches, needing a lesson about her own potential. Max Lucado brings the story of great potential into the hands of children. Beautiful illustrations and a powerfully written story really work to catch a child's imagination. A great read for children 5 and older!

I thought it might be too advanced for my kindergartener, but he enjoyed it and understood the point. A really cute story- simply written but powerful message.
